athens riots - the destruction
View of Kanningos street in Exarhia district of Athens opposite the National Technical University of Athens after the unrest of the 8th of December.
The killing of the 15 year old boy Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman resulted in widespread riots that altered the city landscape. When I walked in the streets of my town the day after the riots I instantly forgot the image I had about Athens, that of a bustling, peaceful, energetic metropolis and in my mind came the old photographs from WWII, the civil war and the students uprising against the dictatorship. Thus I decided not to turn my digital camera straight to the destroyed buildings but to photograph through an old camera that worked as a filter, a barrier between me and the city.
